Wine for the Soul features harpsichord music of Bach and Handel as well as that of Froberger, the preeminent 17th century German composer whose music influenced both Bach & Handel in their youth. Here Nancy Metzger shows off the baroque improvisatory style in the Bach Chromatic Fantasy, the Handel Prelude from the A Major Suite, and the Froberger Toccata II. The popular 3 movement, G Major Toccata of Bach, the Froberger Suite XX in D and a seldom heard Handel Overture from Amadigi round out the disc. Review: "Upon listening to Wine for the Soul... you will enter an enchanting world of the Baroque era...Ms. Metzger produces richness of sound, communicates mastery of style, and demonstrates personal conviction...Both [Bach pieces] are instilled with musical and rhythmic momentum, stylistic articulation, and exquisite ornamentation. With a natural sense of musical direction, the artist travels through the musical key centers with freedom, yet always maintains the rhythmic architecture. Her interpretation displays the composer's improvisational intent in a convincing manner...This is ravishing music performed by a compelling harpsichordist." - Sherry Kloss, The Triangle, magazine of Mu Phi Epsilon, International Music Fraternity. Listeners comments: “Wonderful! Some of your best playing!” - Rod Atkinson, harpsichordist “Nice variety of music and a thoughtful program. The harpsichord is very ‘present,’ but clear and strong, which is the nature of this instrument. A success! Congratulations!” - Byron Will, instrument maker. |
