November Thoughts

11/27/2002: On "Using Student Paint"

Someone suggested "it will only last about 200 years... and here's a little suprise... youll be dead by then. and its THIER loss not yours. "

Well, IMO if you are or will be serious about your career and reputation as an artist that people INVEST in, you will ignore what's inside that quote.

11/22/2002: On "Being Possessive"

I am finding myself becoming possessive of the angels I draw, in that I've not responded to several offers this week. One offer was to use my art to advertise underwear. Another was for an "idea that was not developed yet." And yet another was for a book that I have not read nor know anything about. The cover was supposed to display a naked angel with flippers, a snorkel, and a video tape. Now... the nudity in my art is a metaphor for what is pure, true, and not hidden. Underwear implies something should be covered. And I just don't know what in the world swimming suits and video tapes have to do with angels. I can't bring myself to illustrate these things. I am in cahoots with the lord. And the lord don't like drawls or recording devices.

11/20/2002: On "The Dead Artist Society"

What's up with all the dead artists? As artists ourselves... why don't we start taking the responsibility of discussing *Living Artists*!

11/10/2002: On "What's Appropriate"

There are some things I just can not draw. Not yet... not till I understand what it is that I'm bringing out into the world. For just recently, I had another vision. And it was disturbing. One of the questions I have to ask myself when I see these angels (or anything non-earthly), is what role my ego, expectations, or definitions play in understanding what these visions are. How influential are my worldly associations interpreting what I see? Am I capable of passing off something bad as good, and vice versa? Am I able to be completely objective with this project? I'll continue wrestling with these issues (and the visions) until I can come to a comfortable solution. Meanwhile, I can only show what I label "appropriate." And that may not be appropriate at all!
