3/21/2003: On "Angels and 9-11"

Someone once asked me to quickly render a drawing of naked angels with the American flag shortly after the 9-11 event. My hands started such a thing, but my heart could not finish it.

Naked Angels are the free spirits of all nations. To assume that they are protective over an (assumed good) group, or, sympathetic toward an (assumed good) political party is ludicrous, not to mention, highly offensive. Surely, this person had "good" -marketing- intentions with this proposal, but I am not one to propagandize the "goodness" of a starry-eyed and striped group such as this... not at the expense of my soul.

3/21/2003: On "Documenting Mental Art"

I'm growing interest in the decision process artists go through. One day, I'm going to document every little decision I make (and every action) while drawing and see what chaos results. I think it will be interesting - for what purpose other than satisfying my own curiosity, is unknown. Maybe I'll document the inspiration part too. ...wonder what will be revealed...

3/7/2003: On "Art and Bug Spray"

I remember, once I had a problem with spiders and carried around a can of bug spray where-ever I went. It was an unfortunate moment when I grabbed the wrong can to spray a picture with what I thought was fixative. I had 2 choices. Throw the thing away, or force a work-a-ble solution. The bug spray created a texture that was all wrong, but instead of attempting to get rid of it, I worked "with" it. Thus, I came up with all sorts of interesting movements and textures in what (honestly) would have been a boring, flat picture. :-o
