Canada has a rich coinage history. Prior to Confederation in 1867 the Province of Canada produced large cents in 1858 & 1859 plus five, ten and twenty cent pieces in 1858. In additon, large numbers and varieties of tokens were produced during the Colonial period. Most of the 'modern' coinage (with the exception of the 1945, 1947 & 1948 silver dollars and certain varieties) is readily available in higher grades at modest prices. Much of the earlier coinage is also available in nice collectible grades at reasonable cost. Higher grade specimens of some of the earlier coinage can be difficult to locate and can be expensive. Collecting the coinage of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland can present it's own challenges and greatly add to the pleasure of collecting the coins of Canada. Many of the colonial tokens are available at modest cost and enthusiastically collected by type and variety.
