The Sacramento Valley Coin Club
Our 'home' club - Meets the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at the SMUD building on the corner Elkhorn & Don Julio Blvd. in Citrus Heights (suburb of Sacramento, Ca.) at 7:30 p.m. . Meetings usually last about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. The first meeting of each month is a show and tell night and the second meeting has an educational presentation. In addition, each meeting has an auction where members can offer coins, currency and exonumia for sale 'to the highest bidder'. Meetings are fun and informal with the business portion held to a minimum. Visitors are always welcome and admission is free. If you live in the greater Sacramento area why not come out and visit the club?
The coin market is as active now as I can remember it ever having been in my 40+ years as a collector. Choice coins and currency are in big demand and sell quickly. As dealers, our greatest challenge is in finding new material. Coins are not like 'widgets'. There is no manufacturer of 'Buffalo' nickels (for example) that you can go to and get more of. Competition among dealers for choice and hard to find material is keen.
Like everything else in life, this rising market is good for some and not for others. It's good news for the collector looking to sell off part of his/her collection. It's not so good news for the collector looking to fill holes in his/her collection.
Our one wish is that this growth is the product of a renewed interest in the history and beauty of coins and currency and not just a market being driven by greed. Our greatest 'profit' in coins has always been in learning, enjoying and meeting new people, all of which have greatly enriched our lives if not our bank accounts.
